ABOUT

Just a small section to answer Q&A, and put our inspiration and some of the behind-the-scenes in the creation of Concrete Kingdom from both A.J. Zoerman (writer) and Zeianira (artist).

WRITER

Today, I feel like talking about a huge inspiration to Concrete Kingdom. Namely, how a little-known (but my second favorite) superhero lead to the concept of Lase. Namely Jack Cooper Hawksmoor.

When I first heard of him, and began reading Warren Ellis' Authority I became fascinated by the idea of characters with powers based on Urban Environments, and elements. So when I started my third try at making a comic, I wanted to reflect that. I ended up combined Jack Hawksmoor's abilities with a race known as Lares from Roman Mythology (eventually shortening it to Lase).
Some of the inspiration is rather obvious. Urban Whisper being a-re imagining of Jack Hawksmoor's ability to talk to Cities, and the City-Scape itself being a re-imagining of the place Jack Hawksmoor goes when he communes with Cities in the New-52's Stormwatch. As well as Hawksmoor's ability to cling to walls, and leap incredible distances, and even the fact Lase can't survive out of Cities (wait did I reveal that yet? oops.) all being a callback to Jack Hawksmoor in one way or another.
However, another, probably more subtle reference is the naming method. Jack Hawksmoor's last name is based on Nicholas Hawksmoor, a baroque architect. In the same way that his name was created. Most Concrete Kingdom characters (besides Caliburn and Diarmuid) have names based on architects, and inventors. With their powers being a reference to their works, and creations.

I feel like it was Warren Ellis' creation that really helped us develope the unique setting for the story of Concrete Kingdom.
